Lace
The above images are from some samples collected by cave explorer and NASA biologist Dr. Penelope Boston's research team from a lava tube cave in the Cape Verde Islands. The samples were purple in color, but little else is known of the actual composition. One of the interesting things about the lace form is that similar forms have been seen by Michal Gradzinski, a Polish researcher, in cave pearls from Slovenia; in samples from Grand Cayman Island caves; and in some pool fingers from Hidden Cave in the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico.

Many scientists believe that caves on Mars may well be a good place to search for life. The enclosed nature of caves would protect possible life forms from the effects of life-killing ultraviolet radiation found on the surface of the Red Planet.
